English is a very interesting language that sometimes can be tricky and sometimes confusing. The language has such an ever-growing huge vocabulary that it is almost impossible to keep track of words sometimes. If you are an English Language writer then you know how sometimes grammar and words can confuse the brain. There are terms like Homophones, Homonyms, Synonyms, Antonyms, and Homographs. Words that sound similar but has a different meaning and spells different are called Homophones. Affect and Effect are not the only words that sound similar but have a different meanings. There are words like heal and heel, for and four, Knight and night, write and right, then and then, accept and except, and many more. One really needs to keep things in mind while using such words because they might change the meaning of your sentences if placed instead of the other word in the sentence.
Let’s see what the Google dictionary gives the definition of these words. As we have seen that there are more such words like effect and affect. Then we will also see their roles as a part of speech which will further help you understand these two words and know how to apply them in the sentence according to their meanings.
Difference between Affect Vs Effect
Affect – It means ‘to have an effect on; make a difference to’. It also means ‘touch the feeling of; move emotionally.’
Effect – ‘a change which is a result or consequence of an action or ‘the lighting, sound, or scenery used in a play, film, or broadcast’ or it also means ’cause (something) to happen; bring about
In short, we can say that Effect is the change and effect is the result of the change. For Example – Reading has the power to affect a reader’s thinking and That movie had a bad effect on him. We can clearly see the difference here.
With the definitions in front of us, we can clearly see the difference between Affect and Effect. Now let us see the function they have as a part of speech –
So, the word ‘Affect’ is a Verb as we can clearly say that from the above definition. It shows a kind of action in some way whereas when we say the word ‘Effect’, as a part of speech it represents two parts of speech i.e Noun and Verb. As a noun has two definitions and as a verb, it has one. There is this one technique that you can use to remember the part of speech affect and effect are. The technique is to remember the initials of each word in mind. Remember the ‘a’ of affect as in for ‘action’ and ‘e’ of effect as in for the ‘end result’ and this way you can help your brain understand these words in a better way rather than confusing the two words with each other.
One thing to always keep in mind is that it is your curiosity that brings the motivation to help you do the action in order to learn things, If you are not curious enough or the matter does not interest you, you will always end up confusing things rather than understanding them with fun and interest. So whatever you do, do it with the interest and with the intention to learn something, that’s how you develop at things. And when it is about writing then consistency is the key!
