What is the right amount of homework for the students? How much homework is too much?

Doing homework incorporates really good qualities in the students like self-reliability, time management, revising, practicing things, being responsible, enhancing the power of retaining of what they learn, etc. not only students’ parents get to know a lot about the students, their studies and learning procedure via homework.

Studies have shown that giving homework to students is beneficial. But, we also know many students that are not interested in doing homework, seem complex to the or not much interesting. How much amount of homework is appropriate for students of various grades?

The Right amount of homework for the students

Let’s know the answer!

  • Researchers have studied a lot about how much homework is enough for students. They have come up with the answer that homework for first-grade students in a day should be limited to 10-20 minutes. In the subsequent level of grade, there should be an addition of ten minutes in the above-mentioned time limit. For example: for grade 3 recommended time is 30 minutes, and for grade 4 recommended time is 40 minutes.
  • These time limits have proven to be helpful for students doing work and gaining more knowledge than just finishing the homework and getting exhausted with it.

The ten-minute homework reduces the chances of students getting anxious rather it helps them to understand more with patience and let them enjoy homework task much more because they get the time for other activities too, which are equally essential for their progress. This type of less time-limit homework shows more impact on students even for those who face difficulty in regular home assignments.

  • Teachers should make homework assignments keeping in mind the time duration, which should help students as much as possible regardless of setting stereotypical homework standards. It’s known that assignments whether single-skilled or cumulative have productive results on the skill development of students. Assignments also culminate in their idea of which skill students should use according to the problem type.
  • Homework should promote practicing skills in the students. Practicing the equations, and skills that they have learned in class at home brings autonomy and more retention ability.
  • In case of student has read a chapter of the new session out of curiosity, and didn’t get some points, he can ask the teachers in class the other day, to be more engaged, and excited reading the chapter and discussing it.
  • Homework should be less, by less we mean it shouldn’t put a burden on the students, instead should polish the proficiency and concepts in minds of students. The method and skills they learn in the class need to be revised and practiced again by doing homework. They should be able to perform the skill all by themselves by doing everyday little tasks as homework. Time for homework shouldn’t exceed more than two hours in case of high school, here the amount of work can be more but designed well to bring good study habits in them.

How to find out if homework is right and effective?

It is essential that teachers provide feedback by writing or speaking live to the students after each homework,  they cannot judge or analyze their effort better than a teacher.

Assignments should be given to the students, in that form so that their parents also get involved, participate, and support the learning of their children. They get familiar with the student’s interests and strengths.  It is seen that many parents are keen on the scores and grades of students and become controlling, this can lead to students becoming puppets, and less independent while doing homework causing an ultra loss of interest in studies. Parents should understand overall development of students is really important which home assignments and homework can nurture in them. The right homework should motivate parents to engage their students in learning and never be a source of such conflicts.

Homework should not be that complex, though easy enough so that they don’t hop onto other sources to get help like phones, the internet too much. Some students don’t have access to the internet or upgraded technology, so teachers should check the needs of students and design homework accordingly.

Teachers should help and guide students regarding homework before leaving the school premises. A teacher should welcome any questions related to their homework and practically put forward the solution in a way that their independent learning doesn’t get affected. We have put forward some really workable expert advice (National Education Association and National PTA) for a healthy amount of homework, which simply emphasizes that teachers should allot homework that takes not more than 10 minutes fie first-grade students to complete, 30 minutes for third-grade students, 40 minutes for fourth-grade students, adding 10 minutes with exceeding grade level.
