Math is a kind of subject that is fun if understood properly. It is not intuitive at all, learning math needs a lot of instructions, which are best provided by skilled math teachers. Every teacher wants to make students study math so that they can succeed in it. Cramming never like never, helps the students specifically, in math.
According to research, knowing math facts is important; the best way for students to know math facts is to use them regularly and develop an understanding of numerical relationships. Memorization, speed, and test pressure can all be detrimental.
Strategies to teach the students to study math
- Studying by the instruction
When preparing for an individual assessment, students could take practice tests with answer keys or work on previously completed problems. Tell your students that making mistakes is normal to motivate them.
Set the standards high for all students
Teachers are required to encourage the students spite of any gender that they can do well in math, developing a growth mindset in the students will boost their confidence in practicing more and more math and do well ultimately.
Setting high expectations gives students “a push” to give their best shots in their studies and create enthusiasm in them.
Work on the basic skills
Think and work on the fundamental ways or just the basic ways possible for a mathematical problem, so that it can be done by the students who are having more difficulty with the math.
Also, focus mot=re on the skills that are going to appear in the future scenarios in the student’s life. Try to make their skills strong so that you don’t have to use extra hours on teaching that, again and again, every time to the students while teaching.
Add tests to your plan
Tests after the completion of the topic or formative assessments are beneficial to see what the students have learned regarding the concepts. Giving students short duration quizzes will also enable the teachers to monitor the progress of individual students related to mathematical problems, reveal the weak spots of the students, and also help in evaluating the teaching methodology so that they can change some methods if needed.
Do the ‘math talking’
Discussing math in the classroom will enhance their thinking power and let them evolve new ways to solve the problems, if not, they still can try, right! Let the students tell their way of solving a problem simultaneously if a student has come up with the solution early, make him/her tell others how he/she has solved the problem.
Make games out of solving math
Math can be stressful, causing “math anxiety” which most of us can relate to. Games are a great way to foster students’ engagement and participation in math class.
Use rewards
Set the weekly plans, and associate the rewards with them like points, coins, badges, etc. weekly challenges will build the inspiration in the kids to b prepared and they will get excited for “what’s coming next”, just not this they will develop the quality of competing, students who are not able to show their best in one task will try to beat other in next one, creating a good hope.
Tips to study math effectively
- To succeed in mathematics, you must not only read, attend classes, and study, but you must also practice the skills.
- Create a study schedule.
- Keep a mathematics notebook.
- Before class, read your textbook.
- Provide textbook examples
- Document the mathematical procedures
- Re-examine previously studied concepts
- Provide a synopsis of concepts and procedures.
- Reread before a quiz or test
- Correct quizzes and tests
Final Thought:
Instead of attempting to memorize when studying, they should try to replicate the model in which they will be assessed. If students are preparing for an individual assessment, they should ideally practice alone. They could practice presenting and demonstrating their work to peers, family, or friends if it is a presentation of learning. This would allow students to reflect on and improve their performance before their assessment.
