Reasons why a teenager might join a gang in the '60's is because, they want to belong. A passage right from teenage to adulthood. Desire to share interests, even if those interests are viewed negatively. To feel popular, or even if the group is not viewed as not popular. Needs to separate and differentiate from parents. Rebellion, revolt from adults. Low self esteem.
