The pinnacle of education is self-directed learning. It is said to be the key to effective learning because pupils change how they absorb and apply what they learn. Many kids may find this intimidating because they are accustomed to receiving assistance from teachers, and the shift can be challenging. Students, on the other hand, may learn to take control of their learning and go on the path to success with the right direction and nurture.
Although the most essential role of a teacher is to be conscious of the power they have and to utilize it to empower their students. I’ve taught history, Spanish, and psychology in middle and high school, both in-person and online, and my objective is to constantly show kids that they are capable of more. Here are some strategies for assisting children in becoming more self-sufficient in the classroom.
Guide to making students independent learners
- Teaching self-assessment
Self-evaluation is the first step toward self-criticism. This is critical since learning is never complete unless you question yourself about the drawbacks and benefits of anything you go through or across. Give the students several opportunities that allow them to understand the topic, their own perspective, and how to express that.
- Teach growth mindset
People with a growth mindset think that their most fundamental talents can be enhanced through hard effort and dedication—brains and talent are only the beginning.” This perspective fosters a passion for learning as well as the perseverance required for outstanding success.” Dweck et al., 2015).
Teach the students the importance of the learning process, phases of learning, then gaining achievement.
- Encourage collaborating and grouping with others
Allow your students to do high-quality small-group work on a regular basis, and encourage them to learn from one another and create their own ideas rather than relying on you for answers.
- Encourage them to set goals
Consider assisting pupils in developing learning objectives based on their own learning abilities if they are currently lacking the desire to study. For some students, a particular objective can be to provide movement breaks for the class. Another kid can establish a goal to fill up his or her thankfulness or appreciation notebook with images or artwork. Pinterest can help other students become more interested in providing them with suggestions about new subjects to study. Teachers may assist students in identifying their talents and determining how to develop personal objectives. Encourage pupils to learn to be self-disciplined. Encourage them to make a commitment to themselves to begin working toward their objectives. Assist students in defining themselves as persons who commit to and achieve their goals on a continuous basis. It will almost certainly be required to remind them on a regular basis that successful individuals forgive themselves when they make errors and move on.
- Motivate your students
Make students aware of the importance of literacy, and learning. Bring in them the passion for studying by indulging fun and exciting assignments in the teaching schedule. It is really important for you, as well to show your passion for teaching and zeal towards your students and their learning. Talk about their goals, and motivate them that they have the capability to achieve that.
- Teach them to check on the progress
“Check where you are going”, whenever possible go on checking the progress you have gone through so far. This implies that on the streets too, teachers should teach students to check their progress themselves. Teachers can also look at the assignments done by students, check them, and reach out to them, telling the substitutes if they are failing to perform well, and how it should be done, but calmly.
- Give them feedback
This can help pupils gain confidence in their ability to work alone. Limit the use of achievement grades and scores, and instead consider assigning marks based on effort level.

Encourage them to focus on themselves and develop demanding but achievable objectives. When pupils attain this level of independence, they will have learned critical skills that will help them flourish in school and beyond.
